Health information is highly sensitive and confidential and is covered by the privacy provisions in state and federal legislation. As a Behaviour Support Practitioner (BSP) in Australia ensure that the use of digital technologies is applicable for Australian client health information – for example behavioural data is definitely considered health information, as such the use of various electronic tools is challenging as to whether these programs are compliant with Australian privacy provisions. For example, is the data held in a “cloud” based data centre that is situated on Australian land? Does the client own their own data? Who has control of the access to such data? and show is the data managed in a data breach situation? As a BSP you are responsible for ensuring that data gathered is safe. Use apps that are compliant and accredited to auditing requirements.

Your practice will define whether people with search you out to provide their service. The standards you uphold, your approach, your skills and the manner in which you engage with not only the stakeholders, but also the vulnerable person you are working with all define how well and sought after you will become as a BSP. Take control of your own destiny, don’t expect others to provide you with learning opportunities, grab the brass ring, attend that PD, engage with networks, improve yourself – your practice will be all the better for it.
